This week we received a special announcement from UUA President Susan Frederick-Gray with updated guidance about returning to gathering. Her advice is entirely in line with First UU’s statement on waiting to reopen, but her message also comes with a date. “Based on advice from experts, we continue to recommend that congregations not gather in person. We also recommend that congregations begin planning for virtual operations for the next year (through May 2021).” Take a deep breath. This is big. 

With continued guidance from UUA, the Board, staff, and committees will do their very best to help First UU thrive during this time.

Dear First UU Friends, 
A couple of months ago, I spoke about the marks of a prophetic congregation, and shared some characteristics named by Meg Riley in the book A People So Bold. Riley tells us that prophetic congregations “embody radical caring in the present and orient themselves squarely toward the future.” I am so proud to be a part of this community that is doing both of those things beautifully. Even as we look toward a future that is uncertain, there are some things we know for sure: this congregation has been caring deeply for one another for decades, and we will walk through this current crisis together, helping and holding each other (even if virtually) until we’ve made it through. I do believe we will emerge from this odd season with deeper relationships, new skills and avenues for living out our UU values, and greater clarity of our mission and place in the wider community. Thank you for the opportunity to learn, serve, and grow alongside you as we continue to rise to this challenge.
